The Post-Graduate Mindset

A few months ago, a candidate messaged me to inquire about our MFD Part 2 MINI course. During our conversation, she asked a question that many candidates think about but rarely voice out loud:

"Dr. Rajitha, are you going to provide absolutely everything I need to know before the exam? For example, will you teach me everything about oral medicine from scratch?"

My answer to her was simple, direct, and perhaps a bit surprising:

"No. I am not going to teach you oral medicine, nor am I going to spoon-feed you standard dental subjects. That is completely outside the scope of this course."

If a candidate wants to memorize every line, classification, and theory of oral medicine, the market is flooded with massive textbooks. Anyone can buy them and try to read from A to Z. But here is the brutal truth I have seen from years of coaching: The candidate who tries to read everything from scratch will never finish the material before the exam—and they won't pass.

To succeed in a Royal College examination, you have to fundamentally change how you think. You need to drop the undergraduate school mentality and adopt a postgraduate mindset.

The Reality of a Postgraduate Exam

Being a postgraduate candidate means you already possess a foundational degree, core dental knowledge, and clinical experience. You are no longer a dental student sitting in a lecture hall waiting to be told what to memorize.

If a candidate still expects a tutor to step in and explain basic undergraduate-level concepts, they simply aren't ready to face a postgraduate board.

Postgraduate examiners aren't testing your ability to regurgitate a textbook chapter. They are testing your clinical judgment. They want to see how you perform under time pressure, how you manage a difficult patient, and whether you can safely synthesize clinical data to formulate a precise differential diagnosis.
